Our galaxy. Our Milky Way. Have you ever wondered why the center of galaxies seem to shine brighter than the rest of the mass? The central region of galaxies is known as the Active Galactic Nucleus (or Nuclei) (AGN), which projects unusual energetic activity. This unusual activity is the result of central supermassive black holes. According to recent work by astronomers working with NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, the dimming and brightening of a galaxy’s AGN may be due to the deprivation of fuel (material, mainly gases) for the black hole, which causes a shift in the appearance of brightness of the galaxy.
