Did you know the Makarov PM was the first firearm to enter space?
Yuri Gagarin Soviet cosmonauts went to space armed. Members of the cosmonautic corps were equipped with a regular Makarov (PM) gun, the same one that policemen used. It was distributed in case the cosmonauts landed in the wilderness on their return to Earth, \ »for protection against wild animals or criminal elements\ ». The Russians have been packing heat in low Earth orbit for decades.
Along with fishing gear and a first aid kit, the Granat-6 survival kit in every Soyuz spacecraft has a Makarov PM semi-automatic pistol and plenty of ammunition.
Presumably available to hunt game or provide a self-defense option, the pistol is just one more tool for the space-faring Russian to use if things go wrong.
