At 47 years of age Alan Shepard became the oldest astronaut to walk on the moon. As a joke before entering the Command Module pad leader Guenter Wendt gave Shepard a special gift, a cane with a note that said LUNAR EXPLORER SUPPORT EQUIPMENT. Shepard also gave Wendt a German WW2 helmet with a note Col. Guenter as he was known as the pad fuhrer. The gifts were done with humor and no ill will as both men were good friends.
