All watched over by drones, we became accustomed to regarding the singularity, not as a cataclysmic event, but as a series of subtle shifts in the nature of our relationship with technology. Cataclysm would surely come, though, and so, faced with the prospect of extinction, we sought to leave an unsustainable Earth.
