NASA’s New Nine watching the launch of Wally Schirra’s Sigma 7 on October 3, 1962. The group was selected to join the astronaut corps on September 17, 1962, but they did not begin work in the astronaut corps right away. Since they were all test pilots, they all returned to their respective flight test stations and continued their work. Watching Schirra’s launch was the first task that these astronauts had to perform for the space agency.
