John Herschel Glenn Jr., who passed away December 8, 2016 at 95 years of age, was the first American to orbit the earth. His historic mission circled the planet three times on February 20, 1962 – 55 years ago this month. In 1998, Glenn became the only member of the original Mercury seven to also fly on the space shuttle – and, at 77 years, the oldest person (thus far) to fly in space.
