An early prototype of the Apollo command module undergoing a test of the LES (launch escape system) on June 29, 1965. This was intended to activate and carry the astronauts away from a failed launch if it so occurred. This design was employed all the way back to the time of Mercury, yet was never utilized during Gemini; Gemini utilized ejection if necessary. It was decided that the LES would be safer if an emergency did arise during Apollo. Have a great day!
