STS-1, the first mission of the Space Shuttle Program. Photographed is the Space Shuttle Columbia at Kennedy Space Center’s Launch complex 39A. The launch occured on April 12, 1981. The external fuel tank of the Columbia is painted white. Later on, they decided to not paint it white anymore because the normal red color wasn’t ugly so there wasn’t any need to paint it white and the paint was just extra weight that needed to be launched.
